This necklace was given to me by my Mom, it traveled across the seas from an island in the Mediterranean Sea in Croatia, to a cold and chilly 1960’s Toronto, ON. I’ve always envied my mom’s nautical jewelry. She grew up on a small island where most of your life was spent kneeling for Mary, farming the land, and dreaming of jumping on a ferry to explore the rest of the great wide unknown. Her brother’s - my uncles - became sailors and captains, like their father. They lived on the water, smoked cigarettes and drank rakija. Growing up in suburbia, this all sounded so romantic to me. I love wearing this necklace, reminding me of my Momma and a simple but so satisfying life - so far away from this hustle and bustle.
